View Full Version : Scottish 1/4 mile meet
There's a non-mag day happening up at Crail on Sun 2nd March.
Any of the Scottish lads (or even Sassenach's with a weekend to spare) fancy heading up and getting some 1/4 mile times in?
Shugs - You'll have it back by then, no?
Murf - See how much difference the map has made?
Me - If i can sort the 4 wires.
Lee - It be done by then?
Marc - Fancy it?
Anyone else?
It should be quite quiet being a non magazine day and you'll get a good few runs in. Plus it should still be quite cold so plenty nice dense air to suck up.
I reckon i'm going up anyways so who's for joining me?

Start of the month = pennies.
I'm in if I can get time off work.
If I'm here, and the car is ready  I'll def give it a whirl, see what the old girl has got:thumbsup:
The non mag days are pretty good, and your not stood queuing waiting for your run. Saying that I only did 3 last time, didn't want to break anything:hidesbehi
Yeah, i should be up for this, if the fecking thing is working by then!!
Never done a 1/4 mile before, whats the best plan of attack?

i reckon i could be up for it as well, got a bit of a crunch coming from 4th gear but i'll kill the box before i replace it, a day at crail might just do it!:driving:
just need to sort a few niggles out first but will do that once i get my tools from my old mans house and a decent day to do it
much is it for a run/session?
olber, why dont you arrange a weekend where a few of us come over and can get your car wired up and going? that way you have time to sort out any little niggles before you take it to crail?
murf- get your injector yet?
millentubby- its only 2 days away from the end of the previous month;)
It's looking good for me Olie. Anyone coming from the West, just batter up the M8 to Livi and over to wards the bridge via Winchburgh, It's a pretty direct route to the Forth Bridge. MT I'd imagine that's a pretty straight route for you too. Could meet at mine on the way there.
Sounds like it could be a winner then, sweet.
Gaz, am off all next week so gonna get everything done then. The wiring is actually done, believe it or not lol It's just the leak to sort, the exhaust, the clutch pipes, the brake pipes, the front suspension and an ARB to sort. Oh and the gear cables too. If anyone wants to drop by next weekend i'll hopefully have it running by then.
February will be my shakedown month though so should be fine for this
Add your name to the list if you're coming then :
1) OlberJ - MK1.6
2) MT - Mk1.6?
3) Lee - Mk2V6SC
4) Murf - Mk1.5
5) Gaz - Mk1.5
6) Shugs - Mk1.5
Dunno how much they charge now but it used to be £5 to get in then £20 for as many runs as you can do, i'll find out for sure though.
Personally i'll be happy to get into the 13's, anyone else got an aim?
Murf, best bet is to practice launching, get the max revs you can pull away with with just a tiny bit of wheelspin.
I used to launch my car off the handbrake when i had the 205 but not sure if you can do that on a RWD car? Anyone know for sure?
I think you should be aiming for
Olber 13.5-13.9,
MT 13.5-13.9,
Lee 13.0-13.5
Gaz 12.8-13.3
Shugs 24.0-28.0 (just kidding lol ... 12.8-13.3)
Once the V6 gets more use and we can iron some things about, I reckon we could take 0.75 to 1 second off the times with minor mods!

Gotta remember that Crail has a shit surface - so I'd add a few tenths to account for poor traction.
Bad drivers always blame something else!
lol lol lol

16-01-2008, 11:17
Just going by what I'm told - haven't done a 1/4 mile run before!
I think at the normal 'thrash' days it's around £5-£7 to get in and £15 for unlimited runs on the strip and drift oval.

not to mention its in scotland so itll probably be freezing and pissing it down, hopefully its not and we get a few good runs in
i would say im looking at 13's going by what everyone ran at the pod, wasnt stu the only one to hit the 12's?

16-01-2008, 12:51
count me in wont have a 1.5 by then but will have a standard mk1 to run.
been a few times to crail with my rolla gti and r19 16v good day out and when its not a mag day usually get a lot of runs
millentubby
16-01-2008, 14:38
Deffo gotta have some standard mk1's/mk2's so we can get a worthwhile data set.

Yup and just to rub it in he costed over the line at 80mph having broken the gearbox after 1/8 mile and free-wheeled the other 1/8!

Did you get that turbo boosting right Gary?
Would have thought she is running a bit light at 216Bhp after that rolling road test. Should think she should be up around the 240 mark

thats one of the niggles i was talking aboutlol
havent really done much to the car due to the weather and dark nights
going to take the acutator off and stick a few washers on it, should add a little more preload to the spring to see if that helps any, if not then ill inspect the stock recirc valve and turbo itself, the chargecooler is now holding all its coolant as i stuck an expansion tank from a proton on it, seems to have cured it
also got a set of supercharger lights there to go on it, but need to go buy a new plate for them, then make a start on colour sanding the paintwork
you make it to crail in the supercharger?

Don't think its the actuator as changed it over to one Paul gave me and didn't make any difference.
My money was on the exhaust at the start but I my be changing my mind to the BOV.
S/C has been SORNED since last year and just got no time. Should have been off this week and have ended up working a 37 hour week. Its all on double time so two weeks extra pay coming.
The fiesta had its gearboxed swapped over on Sat night as I'm sure my neighbours will verify as I was battering about in the garage till 1am.
Once I finished with the Uni stiff I was contemplating making a kit car up from the Mk1 in the garden using a home made chassis a la lotus seven style but with the engine in the back. Use the rear suspension and geometry setup from the MK1, using the old chassis as a template and incorporate a lotus seven wishbone setup at the front if I can get the Mk1 hubs to accept it.

im off tomorow so i might try and plug up the stock bov and see if theres any change in the boost pressure, if not then ill pull off the downpipe and check the wastegate and blades are ok at a later date
you had mentioned that the actuator was assisted by the backpressure in the exhaust, which is why i was looking to preload the actuator as swapping stock for stock wouldnt do anything other than prove the original actuator was duff

Might still be the backpressure issue as putting the exhaust restrictor in the downpipe to exhaust connection did change things
yeah i think im gonna come to this if thats cool. colin told me about it so would be good to get some runs done
Hell yeah, it's not us organising it, just turn up and do the runs on the day, it's open to anyone.
Will be good to get all these TB cars down the strip though, See if we can beat Jinja's terrible 13.9 :hand: lol

I'll aim to be there, but not on the strip.

Aye, fair point. Secret meet it is then lol
How are things looking for this then fellas?
I'm definitley rota'd to be working, but I'll take the Sunday off without pay to get a go down the strip. Will be good for comparison if Mark and myself can get a run together, see what difference the headwork does :driving:
I'm still game, my car (at the moment!) is working too, fingers crossed!
Yep definitely still on, am a mibbes for the 1.6 if i can't get the car running and MOT'd in time but i'll definitely be there in something.
I'll be there... some other petrolhead mates coming along too. They're dying to see some 1.5's etc in action.

so how about arranging a meeting point for the glasgow-ish guys and head to crail ala a brutal convoy, what time do you have to sign in at?
That's a good idea Gaz.
You can sign on anytime but it opens at either 8 or 9am.
I'd say, meet at the Bellshill McD's for about 8am?

That's a point, if the V6 ain't workin i'll get an alternator for the t-bar and bring that, forgot it was there lol
Do we wanna meet up with the Easties at the Forth Road Bridge and Convoy up from there?
It'll take us about half an hour to get there from Bellshill so say meet at the bridge for 8.30am?
Then it's 44 miles from there to Crail. Get there about 9.30am.
Sound like a plan?

Unlikely the V6 is gonna be ready in time, as i still need MOT, tax, insurance, wheel alignment and actually get the thing running lol
Will be there in either the t-bar or Weebles CRX/Type-r Accord.
Just remember that the Kingdom has no fixed camera's, they are all mobile so could be anywhere, A92 is a favourite ;)

no problem, ill just blame it on a misfire due to 4 wires not being connected:gay:
still gotta put actuator and all that back on, hopefully my bodge will keep the arm on the wastegate, and add those preload washers in as well

tis a bugger as i was looking forward to it
Bugger indeed Gaz. There nowt else you can use?
Everyone else still ok for 2moro? I know Murf's itching to go if his missus will let him, seein as it's soooo dangerous :ghey:

1st meeting point is Bellshill McD's for us Westerlies, leaving there at 8am.
2nd meeting point is at the ferry carpark thing Shugs pointed out for 8.30am.
3rd meeting place is Crail for about 9.30/10am
The thing normally runs till 4pm so you got plenty time to get your money's worth. And yes i will be blagging passenger rides in everyones car lol
If you're in any doubts whether to come along or not, then definitely do, even if it's just to meet up with everyone and talk Two's definitely head along for the banter.

its just the getting access to it thats the problem, i tried making up a few clips to hold it on but trying to put the clip on with your single index finger is proving a tad challenging, id rather do it right first time than have to pull it all off cos my bodge fell off, knowing my luck it would fall off as i entered crail

Hi guys, just registered 5 minutes ago, thought I would introduce myself on this thread as I was smoked by one of the members today at Crail!:praise2:
Can't remember the boy's name but hopefully I'll get a hand with that one.
Anyway,I'm Ian,27,from Rosyth and drive a pretty standard (at the moment) white Rev3 turbo.I'm sorry but can't add times yet as (stupidly) forgot to pick the slip up before I left. They should hopefully be posted quite soon on the Crail website so could get them up then.I wouldn't say they were that great as my gearbox could do with a recon.:fingersx: Best I got before was a 14.8 in the wet/rain.

Was a top day, good to meet the new folks and the old folks too. Think am a little sunburnt an all now.
Shugs, shame you couldn't make it, will head up next month and we'll both have a car to run
Big cheers to Lee for my 1st drive in a V6, i just love that freakin noise
Murf's mapped 1.5 is now officially a monster! Pure banging too man lol
Cheers to everyone for coming. It's gonna be the 1st of many i think.
Some nice runs there. Got any time slips?
Aye Olie, we'll be there next month...:driving:
There'll be time slips up tonight hopefully.
They come up on the Crail website too as Ian says so no porkies can be told :P
Murf's was definitely the car of the day, even managed to confuse the hell out of the announcer guy.
"And next up we have a Mk1 Mr2, a nice little revvy 1.6 16V.....no? It's a 2.0.....a 2.0 turbo......hmmmm, that's unusual, never heard of that" lol
He also got very confused when Marc and Lee went up to the start line with their 4 bangers making wierd V6 like noises.
His patter was crap too.
Here you are Shugs, sort of condensed but I'll do this while my videos are uploading. (takes ages on a mobile connection)
Run Time Terminal Speed mph
1: 15.575 93
2: 15.096 93.6
3: 14.949 93.4
4: 14.989 94.1
3: 15.096 93.4
4: 16.992 76.9 (olie missing 3rd)
5: 14.671 94.5
6: 14.555 95.1
7: 14.710 95.1
8: 14.519 95.1 <<<<<<Best Time
9: 14.930 93.4
10: 14.823 94.9
11: 14.764 95.3
there's lots of other figure 60ft etc, but I'd be typing them in all night. Best 60ft was 2.178 and ranged upto 2.9 (wet)
Figures should hopefully be up on their site soon. Videos coming in a bit :)
I thought his patter was ok, funny as hell when mark and me went up.
'and now 2 Mk2's one 2.0 litre turbo and an n/a (blips throttle) hang about that's not standard' lol lol

I'll get my timeslip up tomorrow when I scan it at work, I've popped the details of it in the timeslip section for now though.
My first ever time on a strip so I had a reeeeeeeet good time! I was pretty nervous for my first run but once you've done it once your hooked :D
My first time was 16.2  but it was a good starter to show me how not to start a drag - wheels'a'blazin! My next run was a second faster and after that they were pretty consistently low 15's. I was really hoping to get something in the 14's but alas it was not to be! I don't think my technique was too sloppy.
It was a great comparison going up against Lee's car. My car being completely Vanilla v6 (Viper induction and Blueflame exhaust) and Lee's having headwork, fidanza flywheel and the Y section reworked. We're going to have our cars dynoed at somepoint next week so we can see what the power difference is and see how that relates to the difference in the timings.
My Best time was 15.035 @ 93.9 wth a reaction time of 0.697.
I wish they would give you a 0-60 time - that would be interesting. And it would also be handy if they had displays at the end of the track, or on your route back so you could see how you did!
I had a fantastic day today and not one mechanical emergency so that was a bonus! :boogie:
I only took a few pics:

Take a pic of the slip and post the pic up chief, it'll go onto your timeslip post as proof too.
And yes i did miss 3rd, top of 2nd, reached for 3rd, couldn't find it, thought i did but bogged down in 5th instead.
At least Marc was chuffed lol
Torque steer off the line was fun too
Paul Hartley took Lee's car up the strip too apparantly lol

By the by 27th April looks like it'll be the next time we'll head up.
Wow, what a day!!!
Best time was 13.83 secs @ 102MPH against a mk2 turbo.
Got beaten twice from 12 runs.
1st was a WRX impreza, he got more grip off the line as the track was wet and slippy and looking at the stats he had superhuman reaction times of 0.2 secs!! 0.5 secs better than me and explaining why he won by 0.5 secs!!
2nd was some crazy twin turbo nissan that i was beating all the way up the strip, then he just gained on me at the end, he must have had a massive turbo!!
Cannon fodder of the day has to be beating a Lotus Exige, i still cant believe it!!
PAL MURPHY
13.974 sec sec

SIMON HIGGINS

Apologies to Simon Higgins for making your brand new lotus look twatty in my 20 year old toyota lol
Was great to meet all you guys again, need to get modding and do it again soon!
Great that you found your way on here Ian, i passed you again in Inverkeithing when i was on my way home. I waved to you but i guessed you didnt recognise the front end of my car, much more used to the view of the rear  Get a decat and a boost controller ;)

Well, i cannae remember if i posted up saying that i damaged my engine after doing silly speeds.....
Anyway, the only way of remedying this.......is a rebuild.
Well, i dropped the car off in bristol, at a specialists workshop, and by the time i had driven home (7 and a half hours!!!) the engine was out of the car and in bits!
So, i've decided to up the power of it since i have a bit of spare cash.....heres the new spec list:
Oversized Wiseco pistons
Z1 GT600R Turbo's
External Wastegates
Divorced Downpipes
Nismo 555 injectors
Uprated Cosmetic Head Gaskets
Intake plenum Bypass
New oil pump
New water pump
Polished crank
Skimmer heads
John Dixon Chipped ECU
Greddy Profec B Spec II boost controller (running 20PSI ad 9PSI)
OS Giken Twin Plate Clutch........
Sure i've missed some things, but i'll add them later!
Hopefully should be pushing 400 ponies at the back wheels!
Probably explains the top end he had then, bloody shifted once he got grip!
Murf, I'd have had the Exige comfortably with that time ;)
Here's the vid, though I cocked up the title:
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a341/leewa79/th_02032008025.jpg (http://s14.photobucket.com/albums/a341/leewa79/?action=view¤t=02032008025.flv)
I think there is a low 14 with my car in its current state, but probably not in my (un)skilled hands. I got within .35 secs of my time in with the rev 2 engine which had a boost increase. So not too shabby I guess.
I'll post all the videos I have tomorrow, as I have loads, and they are taking an age to upload.
Top day lads
was there any std mr2's - ie ones with the orginal engine type in them? lol
In the vid of Mark v Lee it's interesting to see Lee pull ahead once on the roll - more grunt from the ported heads I presume ( i hope )
Headwork, exhaust y-pipe, and minus 13 stone of idiot with a camera probably helped lol
Lee, can you email me the non "reduced in size for the internet" version of me Vs the exige, got a few people to show it too that might not believe it otherwise!!
Ive got a great vid of Mark Vs Lee, filmed from Marks car. Its dead even at the start and Lee just starts to pull away from 2nd onwards. Got to reduce them in size, then upload them :)
Oh, and that Nissan having 400BHP explains a lot!!
Headwork, exhaust y-pipe, and minus 13 stone of idiot with a camera probably helped lol
didn't want to mention the passenger part ;)
Murf - got a diagram for the power - might as make a 12v reg supply as well for the cost of it lol. mmm where for a soldering iron

Marc, you're car's running the most "standard" V6 out there (Not a dig btw lol )
I'd give the home-brew mods and a new exhaust join a go, there's gotta be a few tenths from that.
