View Full Version : Frisp's celica V6 swap

Paul Woods

Well this ones been a long time overdue but it was time we started sticking the v6 into the odd sillycar.... here is frisps motor, nice car it is too....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300918.jpg

And the offending object in question....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300917.jpg

I started weighing up the wiring tonight and getting my head around the fact the engines in the wrong place :) In reality it shouldnt be any harder than a good old fashioned mr2 v6 swap.

OlberJ
25-06-2008, 19:02
Lambda sensors be staying in the same place?

Will be able to fill it with oil mega easy.

Alternator is right there at the front if u ever need to swap it.

Christ, you'd think these engines were meant for FWD cars lol

gidonlamboo
25-06-2008, 19:02

Nowt like a bit of V6 action to get the juices flowing. That engine bay looks mahusive compared to the mr2 one! You should have no problems cramming it all in there!

wot about the gt4 paul is the problem finding the rav four gearbox or is it more complicated, like lineing up the drive shafts or would u not want to attempt it?.

also wot about the 7 series celica is that a future project would a 1mz fit into one?.

Paul Woods
26-06-2008, 06:42
i will be leaving the gt4 v6 installs to the likes of fourveesix tigger, they are a bit too much hassle on a day to day basis.

The 7 series would be good with a 1mz yes,but would be a much more complicated conversion.

Rowdan
26-06-2008, 14:45
The 7 series would be good with a 1mz yes,but would be a much more complicated conversion.

How much more complicated?
I know Fensport fitted a 3S into one so there's room.
Would putting the 3vz into a new celica be any more involved than the same swap into the Mk3 Mr2 (not saying that wasn't complicated) as they run the same engines from factory? IYSWIM
Sorry for the thread hijack and all the questions.

I think a Gen 7 with a 1MZ or even better, a 3MZ would be the kippers tits

Paul Woods

its just the piggybacking of the original ecu to keep the clocks happy that would be extra work row,the rest would be cake.

A bit more progress today,i got the rest of the engine built so thats now complete, also got the celica power steering pump to bolt onto the v6,it was a less complicated way of doing it rather than using the v6 PS pump.

Next a shiney fidanza as bolted on and a fresh NA clutch....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300951.jpg

Frispies gearbox also had a makeover... check out the gold blingy clutch slave cylinder,im a pimp!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300950.jpg

Then the box was bolted to the engine... bubble wrap on top to protect the paintwork....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300960.jpg

Next job was the driveshaft fitment, this was one of the obstacles with the celica conversion, the old carrier bracket wont bolt up to the V6 block, and the V6 carrier bracket doesn't line up with the NA output hole,it only lines up with turbo boxes.... <caine on> not a lot of people know that <caine off>

SO...... i had to make my own axle carrier bracket from scratch, its old hat though, done it quite a few times now most recently on my own car.I started by making a flat plate that bolts to the block....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300953.jpg

Then a plate is cut that fits the driveshaft bearing carrier.... i have templates of all this shit which helps..... and you got to love plasma cutters!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300957.jpg

Then its given a top hat bracing piece and seam welded.... here it is primed....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300958.jpg

And here is the completed mount back on the engine painted silver, wasted effort though, nobodies ever going to see it....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300959.jpg

Thats it for today, tomorrow the engine goes in.

Paul Woods
09-07-2008, 18:52
okay, today was good, today we gave this beasty a grunty v6 heart transplant....
First thing to do was make the drivers side engine mount, for this its simply a piece of 5mm thick plate with four holes drilled in it in the right places, two for the v6 engine platform and two for the celica mount, problem is though that part of the celica mount interferes with one of the v6 mount holes,so we need to chop that area of the mount away....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300970.jpg
The mount is then bolted to the bar and also given seam welding to both sides to make up for the area we chopped out,it would probably be fine on just the bolts but i wanted extra security. Now before you all scream at me that the celica mount part is cast,i know this.... and it will weld if you do it right, lets just say the added welded areas on it make me feel better about the mount than just having two bolts on it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300969.jpg
Thats basically all you need to do to a gen 6 mount wise to get a v6 to fit.
Oops how did that get there....

It was tight going in but no harder than a v6 mr2 install really. The real fun starts now connecting shit up! ive already had to move a power steering pipe out of the way and grind a smal section of the radiator fan cowling away to clear the exhaust manifold.....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300976.jpg

Today was about starting to connect stuff up,i got the alternator fitted, and it slightly fouls on the relay box,so that will be moved forward so that it has no chance of ever coming into contact with it....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300982.jpg
Ive sorted out the radiator hoses too.... pretty easy.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300981.jpg
In this pic ive done heater hoses, mounted the coilpack/amplifier and joined the fuel feed and return lines....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300980.jpg
The gear selector cables are also refitted along with the hydraulic line, thats just the same as the old engine set up though.
Some stuff just plug n plays though, like the brake servo line here, same as before...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300983.jpg
Ive also taken the liberty of filling the front and rear torque mounts with polyurethane, they look a little weedy to me and the v6 is going to ask a lot more of them than the 3sge did,so poly filling them will make them more resistant.
Shouldnt be long now before it gets wired up!

Today was full of a million little jobs, too many to mention! but here are the highlights..... i had to extend the throttle cable, there was no way on earth it was ever going to reach the throttle body the conventional way,so i made an adapter piece that joins the old celica cable onto a section of camry shifter cable ,its circled red below.... also got lots of vac hoses and the idle bypass hose fitted among other things.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300989.jpg
Also the intake system is fitted, and i made brackets to hold all of that so its supported....

Here's an overview of what it looks like now...

Time to pick this back up where we left off... im exhausted, quite literally! It took a full day of exhaust mods to get the v6 downpipes to clear the subframes and eliminate the Y pipe.....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300995.jpg
Also to make the rest of the system line up properly with the V6 pipe i unbolted this middle section, flipped it 180 and bolted it back on.... it now lines up with the V6 downpipe exit...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/woodsport2/S7300996.jpg
This is the new intermediate section that ive made, this goes between the V6 downpipes and the rest of the system, still needs some VHT paint....

So it now has an exhaust system, not long now...

We are at the spaghetti stage.... there was a bit of wiring up to do at the engine bay fusebox,a lot trickier than the mr2's im used to doing but we sussed it out...

The majority of the spag is here in the passenger footwell though, its cramped and poorly lit,so its taking longer, plus im not as young as i used to be lol

With any luck this will be firing up sometime tomorrow all being well.Ive also fully documented every wire connection to be made for you home v6 builders,im nice like that :)

She's alive! Everything works as it should, including the tacho which reads 100% spot on (we didnt have a ballast resistor to remove lyndon???,model variation?)

doesnt quite capture the engine note due to the exhaust being so far away from the camera mic.... much better in the flesh.

It's got a very nice burble from the back, that length of pipe certainly gives it an interesting note.

You'll have road testing to do anyways :P Make it 100 or 150 miles worth. That'll have her babied enough for making the trip up......then play time :D

Well, got back like 20 mins ago. Sounds absolutely amazing. As a testament to Paul's work, she didn't miss a beat during the trip. I did keep her below 4000rpm though, got to baby the engine for a little while.
Off out to play again :D
One extremely happy teddy here :D

Brilliant mate!

How's the handling feel? Is it nose-heavy? Nice increase in power and driveability?

Well he definitely looked a happy bunny when he took it up and down the yard.

OK wee update. Paul, steering is a fraction heavier (good point imho). Change down and 50% throttle @ 4000 RPM = WOW!!!!!!!
Petrol on the way home = less than on the way down so 28-30 ish mpg.
I ran her down around the same speed.
4000RPM = 87-88MPH same as the 4 pot  Major difference. 40MPH in 5th gear = forget changing down unless you wanna go silly :P

Hi Frisp glad you like my car,i was wondering if you know what is the difference in weight between yours and an mr2 if there is any ?

OlberJ
02-08-2008, 09:13
Book figures, ST202 is 1220kg's and a Mk2 N/A is about 1300kg's so a bit lighter.

although i seem to remember someone getting one weighed (mk2) and it being about 50kg's lighter.

Sold the old 3SGE lump - monies paid to the support vehicle fund :)

That's the least I can do for Paul & the two brutal guys :)

The donation was made under a different name to mine in way of payment, just glad I can help out in some way :D
