View Full Version : Insurance Payouts
Anyone know how long it takes to get the money for a write off :cold:
All depends really, should be (fairly) quick if it is a single vehicle accident.. When dealing with insurance claims, you need to be patient.. It could be weeks, it could be months.
I once had a claim which took over 2 years to resolve.
Chase you insurer regularily, try and get names of who you speak to.. stake your claim early with regards to buying the wreck back.

When was the car written off and have you agreed a figure with the insurance company.
I rang the garage it is at today, they said it had to go to another garage because of the extent of the damage and that an engineer would have to have a look but that in their eye's they couldn't see it being repaired.
Why it couldn't have gone straight there I don't know.
Anyway just trying to gauge how long I will be without a car.
Also while this is going through can I insure another car with the no-claims I still have after they have written it off that is and canceled the insurance.

Yes it does seem silly that the car went to one workshp and then has to go to another, they may not have all the equipment to see whats wrong with the car and needs to go to a specialist.
Not sure who you are insured with but they may do courtesy car.
Untill the car is writen off you wont get anything as far as pay out and as Ollie said you will have to be patient.
I dont believe you can switch your no claims as you have a claim outstanding and until then its frozen.
What happened was someone else involved? Are you claiming off someone else?
What car is it i can give you a book price.

They have more or less told me it will be written off if that's the case I won't get a hire car only get one if it's repaired and I'm with nig through flux.
What I was saying about the no-claims when they tell me the cars written off is my insurance canceled there and then or do I have to wait until I'm actually paid out?
My car is a 95 t-bar rev3 with a 1mz in and a few bits 'n' bats so don't really know how they will value it:confused:
pm me your number mate, depending on the bodyshop i can make a call and find out if the engineer has inspected it. We can find out a lot earlier than the insurance company if it's a company we deal with.

Until they tell you its a write off and paid you a cheque then it aint and i would ask for a loan car. Insurance companies dont like paying out the same as any company for extra stuff. Check your policy.
Tough call on the price of your car as its not gonna be in any book. What are you expecting from them? Did they give you an idea when you took the policy?
This is what they say:-
Will I be provided with a courtesy car?
If you are comprehensively insured you may be entitled to a courtesy car for the duration of repairs whilst using one of your insurance Company's approved repairers. The service is subject to availability and for the duration of repairs only. You will not be entitled to a courtesy car if your vehicle is not repairable or uneconomical to repair likewise if your vehicle has been stolen. The full terms of this service will be outlined in your policy booklet.
Value, just market value I think but as I have insured it as a mr2 v6 thats what I should get what ever that is :violin:

I know i would phone them up and ask if its being repaired, if they say no ask them how much they are looking to offer. If they then say well we are not sure if we are going to write the car off then i would ask for a courtesy car. If they are not repairing it yet wont settle then ask them what are you supposed to do walk!. There policy sounds like they are trying to cover themselves.
Let us all know when and if they make an offer.
the policy wording is standard. Courtesy car only whilst vehicle is actually being repaired. Did you take additional hire car cover?
once the insurer pays out your insurance policy serves its purpose and finishes. That's to say - no refunds if you paid the full premium. If you're paying monthly you need to pay the remaining money.

If you get another car though you should be able to put it onto that current policy.
This may cost u more or u may get a refund (not likely) dependant on the new car you put on the policy.
If you are paying monthly and u decide to walk from that particular insurer, you'll probably need to pay a cancelation charge to the insurers, which should work out cheaper than paying the rest of the monthly payments if you've just started the policy.
Whenever you make a claim on a policy the insurer insists that the remaining funds (if paying monthy) are paid for them to deal with a claim.
Your policy still runs from the claim even if the car is written off. Your policy is you with a particular car and you can change the car....
EDIT:
Example:
Start policy month 1
car crashed month 6
so still have to pay 6 months premium before they will deal with claim
if car written off then policy cancelled UNLESS you replace the car with one identical then no further premium payable
at end of 12 months insurance no claims wil not be earned and insurer will prob take further no claims to increase premium to recover some of costs for claim.
Until your insurance tell you the car is an uneconomical repair (financial write off) you should be able to get a courtesy car. i would argue that until the engineer submits his report the vehicle is NOT a total loss.
EDIT 2
YOU CAN CHOOSE THE REPAIRER THAT YOUR CAR GOES TO. THIS IS AN URBAN LEGEND THAT YOU HAVE TO USE THE "APPROVED REPAIRER".
THEY MAY BE ABLE TO AIR ON YOUR SIDE AND THE CAR NOT BE WRITTEN OFF.

Its at the insurer's discretion whether to allow another car to be put on the policy.
If you cancel the policy, yes there's a cancellation charge, but you won't get any money back because there's been a fault claim.
I take it Olber that you're not an insurance expert, unless you know you shouldn't really offer advice.
Cheers guys, need to think about all this now
Like I said on the phone mate, it's the ins that write a car off, up to you IF you claim, up to you if you have it repaired at your cost.
Up to you where you have it done. Pull it from UK assistance sharpish if you don't want it written off. Get it somewhere you know or have been told is good then you can still claim SOME of the costs but only to the limit of the write off level, ING will allow you to keep the car and pay out to a level below the total loss threshold.
Any probs you have my number.

I've just put up a thread in the wanted section, trying to gauge how much the parts might cost and where from :fingersx:

Aye, that's what i said in my post Garbe.
He "should" be able to put another car on the policy, there'll be cases where they say no but it's not very likely.
Again, i said if he's paying monthly it might be worth cancelling and paying the charge as opposed to the rest of his monthly payments. If he's paid in full then he'll not likely get anything back at all.
Don't know what qualifies as an expert in your eyes chief but having worked as an insurance intermediary and directly for Axa for a total of 5 years i like to think i've picked up something along the way lol
if there's a claim against the policy then the full premium becomes payable even if you cancel. All in the small print. I deal with upmteen policies on a daily basis and everyone has had this clause. But each claim is unique and it might get a refund' I doubt it though.
Ant, have you had the same insurance company for a while or did you go with them for a new policy this year?

I wouldnt trust uk assist to repair my car im with direct line and theres no way on this earth i'd have my repairs done there ive seen some of their jobs and know some real rough arse people who work there take your car somewhere else if you do want to keep the car and you can get it repaired at your own garage ie friends etc get them to make you a cash in loo of repairs settlement you would probarbly get a much better job done at a smaller garage that know what they are up to and the staff arnt chasing bonus's to make up their wage or management getting cars rushed out of the doors to hit figures believe me i've been I those shops and it's not good working in them specially if you have any pride in your work
agree steer clear of uk assistance.
Ant, have you had the same insurance company for a while or did you go with them for a new policy this year?
I took out the policy just over a month ago second year I've bben with them.
As far as Uk assistance goes I'm going to try and get it repaired at a different garage and not have it written off, but not sure if I can do this yet.
Tried phoning NIG today but couldn't get though then they were shut:icon_conf
Hopefully get through Monday morning and get it sorted, or would the appropriate people be in tomorrow.:hmm:
It's your choice where the car goes Ant. They like you to go there cos Uk assistance is owned by ING/RBS, direct line and churchill are all the same company. They get kick backs for keeping it in house.
Like i said get it out of the "bodge it and scarper" place find a good referred bodyshop and get them to look at it.
Just phoned they said to phone back tomorrow morning as the engineer isn't there as it's weekend and that they would have to speak to he.
What I said was that I wanted to supply my own body parts(to keep costs down) and that I wanted to take it to another bodyshop
If you need me to call them on your behalf mate, just drop me a text/call me.

Try to get them to send you a copy of their estimate so you can work out how much the parts are going to be uk assist charge a lot more for labour than most body shops they seem to be able to get £35 per hour where others only get between £23 and £26 ph and they get the RAF award [rough as ...] shame you done live up this way I could recomend a few really good shops

I've got someone in mind to do it just need the insurance to not write it off, if I can supply the body parts should only be mainly paint and labour plus a few bit'n' bats brackets, lights, mouldings a rad etc..
if it gets to expensive you could always source another 2 for very little and transplant the important bits over.
If you don't want it written off you can retract the claim.
Call me urgent Ant I have pm'd.
Didn't get very far with this today, bsm found out they've taken it to a salavage yard which I wasn't informed about:icon_eek:
They have told me that it will be inspection by an engineer and that it'll probably be written off, I did ask if I could supply the body parts but all they said was you will have to speak to the engineer after he has looked at it.:banghead:
Oh and one thing sums up uk assistance :liar:
It's this situation where they feel your car is thiers to do as they wish, that it is a piece of metal and it doesn't matter that pisses me off. My car is my car, if iwant it repairing I will claim, if i want to do it myself I will and not tell anyone. Insurance companies write cars off and then peole buy them and put them back on the road. Ok if it's a rep mobile or boring car but if it's cost you a leg and an arm to convert you don't want some knuckle scraper telling you it's gonna get crushed.
I'm thinking of starting a "don't write my car off " assistance company....fight the evil insurance company!!
Found out Broadbent Auto's are in Oldham not too far if I need to get it and it went on Friday according to NIG. The engineer will be out today apparently.
And just wanted to say thanks again to Si for his help.
I would be going down there and taking the Link G4 out a bit sharpish.
If they mention the W word then take some snips and cut the connector off giving yourself 100mm of loom.

Broadbents are a bit like their name says get over there fast if you want anything back dont want to diss them on the web but get down there and photograph everything on the car because if you do get it back and something has been changed or removed you have proof.
We had a Audi in the other day from a recovery yard in Olham and they had taken the passenger air bag and put a duff one in pinched the center console all the special badges swopped the steering wheel the only way the guy could get all the bits back was report the thieft to the police get a crime number and set up another insurance claim or pay for the bits himself.
Think I'll go down tomorrow and see whats going on
Here's a pic of the car from me phone when the crash happened

that much top book then
Mr2s are tough little buggers , i bet with the bumper and wing off it doesn't look that bad .
The recovery guy said it only looked cosmetic, just want to get the "engineer" out of the way then sort it.:swear:
A TRD kit with some quads would take care of most of that ;) Hope the engineer has a bit of passion for cars and isn't just a jobs worth .
My Mondy was run into in a car park , insurance sent me a cheque for £550 within 2 weeks i said you can pick the car up anytime the bloke went er no thanks mate keep it lol
This is the place its at

If it gets repaired it won't be standard, saw a trd kit on e-bay for about £800
probably wouldn't be any good though

If the "w" word gets mentioned I'm going on a shooting spree:duel::tempted:
I'll come join you if they start that shit.
If they steal anything call the police without fail. I'm sure there are enough witnesses on here that knew what was fitted. Hopefully it won't come to that...
Just want me car back, they really have broke me.:alc:
Won't tell me anything:fit:
If not heard anything by lunch time tomorrow I'm going down seeing them:box2:
