So with phils completed and only test driving stuff left to do it was time for swap number 4 since january to commence! someone ring norris mcquirter (if hes still alive!) :)
Here is Mr sadlers mk1 engine bay,i emptied it a few weeks ago in preparation, tomorrow the mounts come off and battery tray off etc...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/philscompleted006.jpg
And here is roberts clip!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/philscompleted007.jpg
And inside the engine bay of said clip is the lump created by god himself...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/philscompleted008.jpg
It'll look much better in a mk1 bay i think.Lots more updates to come as the spanners fly.
Now come on girls,if i can do four mk1 turbo swaps in as many months you lot can get your fingers out and have these cars ready by JAE! ok!!! :!:

My god I think I've just done a little sex wee!!!!!!
So mad this that its all going ahead now I just can't wait for all the first time things ..... you know like the first time I hear it running the first time I get out in it the first time I wipe the smirk off a scooby drivers face!!
I called the VOSA folk to today to get the ball rolling for an SVA.
ooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh:) :) :)

can you gents refrain from discussing the entire ministry of transports rules and regs on robs build thread! :)

(probably going Waaaaaaaaaay off topic!)
That was subtle hint to a nice friendly moderator to perhaps move the posts in a nice shiny new thread, perhaps in the insurance section :)

Ha ha you should have seen me all this weekend Ive been all excited sending everyone I know the pics of my engine :hehe: can't wait to see more as it all takes shape now!
Oh and Paul I've managed to get a free Digi Dash from Scottsmale on WWW.MR2OC.CO.Uk which is cool as for soldering I wouldn't even know where to start to be honest mate but I reckon graham has already done it as I think that its the one he used to have in his before he changed it from the dogleg rev counter to the curve so hopefully it'll just be a case pof popping it in there (I make it sound so easy when its not me doing it)
Sooo I'll know on wednesday and give you a shout once I find out!
Cheers
Robert
Paul Woods
10-04-2006, 05:41
ok cool robert,i think it will still need a corrector box building from jaycar but we can sort that out after the conversion mate.
Paul Woods
10-04-2006, 18:29
some more swap goodness.....today it was time to strip the clip! basically undo everything from the engine bay, remove tie rod arms from suspension mounting points, undo the rear crossmember and exhaust and then lift the whole body off the engine..and i do mean lift, two of us just lifted the body clean off the engine/box.....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/robertsclipstrip003.jpg
And below a shot of the engine/box still on the xmember, tomorrow will see it all stripped down to the bare bones.

millentubby

Weather is indeed perfec' 2day! Went to dundee (got free stuff from Mr T!) and the only thing that I needed was a big fat 3S-GTE powering me through my favourite twisty back roads!
You'll have to take a blast Fife-side when you get your Woodsport Special back Robert!

19-04-2006, 18:58
ok plenty of eye candy for robert today... one nice shiney 3" decat pipe on a very dull faded mk2 bonnet!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/downpipe.jpg
And the same pipe fitted...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/downpipefitted.jpg
next came the heatshield, treated this to a coat of grey VHT heat resistant paint,i think grey looks good against the black.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/heatshieldfitted.jpg
then added the turbo outlet again in the same VHT paint, complete with HKS bov...and check out the polished TOYOTA,shiney shiney!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/polishedtoyota.jpg
Finally i fitted the alternator, this too has been cleaned and painted, and its back casing polished up....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/altfitted.jpg
Starting to look like an engine now! Rad pipes are finished too...lots more still to do though.

i know :)
mart its an xs power pipe, they are ?80 shipped from the states,i use these a lot and i cant fault them (some people complain of cracking but ive never had this). The quality is superb and it comes with all brackets/gaskets/nuts,bolts and even an adapter ring so that you can fit the stock 2.5" exhaust onto it.

20-04-2006, 09:43
Paul, does that mean that with this pipe you don't need to fabricate any extra bits for the exhaust system?
welly_59
20-04-2006, 09:45
no you'll still have to fabricate a center section between the downpipe and the silencer i think

21-04-2006, 15:50
Welly Depends what you call difficult and state of bolts nuts etc which on this area are usually pretty nasty ! soak them in WD or the like the night before but then dont go seeing how hot you can get it ! Its a fecker of a job but is doable but Im defo doing it on the engine before it goes in for sure !
I bought an ivanahumpalot downpipe tother day and its a work of art, once the xs one is here will do comparison shots but have to say Ive heard more good things about xs power stuff than bad things so happy to give it a go !
Paul Woods
21-04-2006, 17:22
im super impressed with the quality guys, they look spot on to me....welly i always fit them with the engine in the car,you do need to take the oil filter off and then remove the oil pressure relief valve(simple) so that you can ease the cat pipe past the oil filter body and more importantly the bolt in that area that holds it on (sometimes the nut brings the stud out with it).

My god! I cannot wait now for my car I'm so excited its unreal! It had a standard engine same old airbox and everything but there was still plenty of power I just can't wait now to see what its lik ein My little light MK1!

[goldy scouse mode on] calm down calm down !:afro: :)
lol @ jiff,scarecrow indeed! :)
robert these mounts stop the engine ripping itself out of the bay,so quite important :)
by the way pics taken using my new pda phone spv m5000,quite impressed with it,class for browsing TB away from the pc....especially when some doink nearby doesnt configure their wireless router for privacy lol free net!

Oh no! Woodsy has net access at work - thats gonna slow the production line down now!
M5000's are quite nice, camera not too bad, but I still prefer a proper digital cam but then view the pics on the PDA using the SD card. Screen on my digi cams often tell fibs!

yeah i like the big screen on this m5000,pretty cool but it eats battery power! oops ive hijacked robs swap thread with pda crap!
back to the swap....today i fabbed up the intercooler pipes using a series of various bends and straights and the original throttle body inlet trumpet, welded them together and smoothed over the joints.I also added a nifty little bracket between the two pipes thats unboltable,so taking the pipes on and off is much easier than the last attempts.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/icpipes.jpg
These will be sprayed glossy white tomorrow and should look the bizz,im very happy with the shape of these, very asthetic! (not two worms humping!)
Also today i bolted up the driveshafts for good, and replaced two snapped wheel studs on the passenger rear wheel.
More tomorrow.

They look really good as nice big one piece pipes rather than the sectioned rubber jointed ones!
Should look dead smart when they've been painted up tomorrow!

Maaaan I'm getting excited and its not even my car!
Robert, Will your BOV sound like the one Kenny-Boost runs?
Paul, just to Hi-Jack quickly, I think the plan is for me to come down in my mk1 with Robert when he comes to pick up the mk1.5 - any chance you could squeeze in a cam-belt change for my humble 4-AGE? Would be super-grateful if that's possible!
(Just stick it on Roberts Tab aswell ;))
what colour will the bolt holding the intake pipes together be..?
will it be a nylock and if so what colour nylock i think blue would look nice against the white pipes..or maybe youll powder coat an m6 and use some compression washers..hmmm..
i think that now your the lleweyln‐Bowen of mk1 engine bays these small details need to be discussed..

what even bent ones? :)
Erm, ah, ohh, good point.
Maybe you could put it up as a colectable. "This bent strut brace may well at one time have been in a car crashed by Jenson Button" etc.
O.S.
Paul Woods
27-04-2006, 18:47
or even this brace was once used at woodsport? ok maybe not.
Right, lots done today, roberts keen to get his car back so deadlines to be met and all that bollox i got stuck in and really made good progress.
Fitted the copulating worms back into the engine bay...they do look good!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/icpipesfitted2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/icpipesfitted3.jpg
And finished locating and securing the IC itself....this swap has the right corner of the boot sectioned off from the rest, keeping a usable boot and the workings completely separate,i quite like this.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/icandframe.jpg
You can see the IC is mounted on rubber blocks that are bracketed to the frame ive added, plenty of room for the stock IC fan behind it and maybe a vent on the OSR wing in the future.
Also i made the exhaust today, stock mk2T item chopped down and rewelded to fit...then painted with VHT paint, this stuff helps show any pin hole blows that occur during testing too.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/exhaustpaintedup.jpg
And finally it fitted to the car...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/exhaustfittedoncar.jpg
SO tomorrow i wire it up and should be turning the key for the first time.
Paul Woods
27-04-2006, 18:51
oh forgot! i added the air filter today too,its a nice item...got it off ebay and it matches the paint scheme really well, these copy filters are really good quality....why pay ????? for something with blitz on it?
Just the expansion bottle and filler neck to add to that bay.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/bayfromns1.jpg
super work. excellent ic location.. where are you getting through flow from for cooling, or just a fan on the inside corner? + side vent pipe?

right i spent today wiring...i just love spaghetti! but first came the battery relocation....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/batteryreloc.jpg
Then finished off locating the filler neck and expansion bottle,i found quite a good place for it this time in an unused area...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/fillerandexpansion2.jpg
So after a few hours wiring and fitting grainger valve and tidying a few other things up the bay was complete and after changing the engine oil she was ready to fire!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/finshedbay.jpg
Flat battery!!!! barstewards! so wheeled her outside and jump leads conected off a decent power source.....and..........
Its alive!!! fired up first time and sounds lovely, congrats rob,its a girl... lol didnt get a chance to run it up to temp and ive still got jobs to do but all looks good and another mk1 turbo leaves the woodsport production line.
Now follows a week of finishing off, roadtesting and thrashing the wick out of....oops! i mean gentle breaking her in to test for faults! :)

Paul Woods
29-04-2006, 07:35
well theres still a list to do,make sure the box is ok and iron out any bugs.....stuff still to do...
make rear boot/ic cover
fit alternator belt
extend wiring to alternator
fit IC fan and wire up both IC and engine bay fan
adjust gear cables/cut/weld stick position
run boost line through to cabin
fit boost gauge
bleed clutch
fill gearbox with oil
fill engine with coolant and bleed
rebuild interior
So ive got that little lot to do before road testing can begin so a few days work left...i really will try to make friday the deadline though mate.
I will do a startup vid for you on monday as well.

ok just odds and ends left,so today saw everything completed, boost gauge, boot panels the lot...heres the boot as it looks now with aluminium panels (painted black) dividing it all off...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/boot1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/boot2.jpg
Ive done a quick start up vid for the media section just using my camera phone so not great!
Now follows a few days of roadtests, rob hopefully friday is a go as the conversion itself is now finished mate,so barring any problems fridays good,i'll report on the roadtests shortly.
Oh one more thing,i didnt have to modify the gear cables at all on this car, thats a first!!! every 1.5 ive ever built has needed mods to the cables, this leaves me thinking toyota must have made many different length cables for the mk1,theres no other way to explain it.

Man I cannot wait now today went sooooo slow at work it was unreal I spent all day thinking about friday!
I'm quite sure I've peed a few people off today going on and on and on and on about it! they just don't understand!

Also spied the gauge in the start up video looks good there man! how is it for vision good I take it?
nice work on the enclosure paul, i like that, a section dedicated for tent & beer.. altho the tent will have to take a hike..
Paul Woods
03-05-2006, 07:01
yep all roberts idea,i do like it too, keeps the business end separate from the beer storage area...i will repeat this IC set up in future i like it that much, all it really needs now is a few vents here and there
Paul Woods
03-05-2006, 18:42
well i did some proper roadtesting today and its a flier! no problems whatsoever...gearbox feels good,no unexpected noises....all good really! more testing tomorrow, its running at 8psi today, cranking up to 10psi tomorrow.

I haven't even bought the belt for the same reason I cant pay you to fit it i'm afraid!
I'd rather not trouble you for doing a job and have to worry about owing even more people money!
Although as soon as i'm back on my feet financially i'll be down the road to get that done...any excuse to visit Woodsport! :D
Thanks for the kind offer though Paul!

Had another great day out in it today took it along the coastal route from Edinburgh to North Berwick nice twisty road with some great open straights!
Was really impressed with how wellit still handles and how much ooooomph it has out of the corners!
Only one little problem has shown up though Paul went to go for a quick drive just now but the lights don't lift, they turn on but the motors aren't even trying I think I've checked the right fuse but apart fromthat I'm clueless what should I check for?
Probably an easy fix and probably my fault for not leaving it with you a full week!
Going seeing my mechanic to on Monday to get these brakes sorted can't wait to have some decent anchors on it!

Paul Woods
07-05-2006, 08:43
lights not working? hmmm....havent touched those, check all of the fuses in the front compartment first and report back,it'll be something simple.
AH unless ive left the headlight switch plug off when i took your dash binnacle off to fit the boost gauge! could be that,do me a favour, check to see if the lights are lighting up when staying down or do you get nothing at all?
Its as simple as removing the dash clock surround to check if ive left the plug off, schoolboy error, apologies if i have.
A quick diagram showing the screws to remove it mate...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/lily/binnacle.jpg
Obviously you dont need to check it if the lights are coming on but if the lights arent coming on and the fuses are all ok then whip the surround off to see if ive left the plug hanging <muppet if i have.
Could it be the headlight relay?
Paul Woods
07-05-2006, 08:59
it could be....or a fuse....but best to see if ive left the switch unplugged.
Only one little problem has shown up though Paul went to go for a quick drive just now but the lights don't lift, they turn on but the motors aren't even trying I think I've checked the right fuse but apart fromthat I'm clueless what should I check for?
You can't have left it unplugged Paul as they are switching on but not lifting.
robert.sadler
07-05-2006, 10:24
Yeah the lights turn on but just don't lift I'm going to the OC Stirling meet today though so I'll see if Graham or Jimi are there and see if they can figure it out! its the 75 amp fuse that I check isn't it?
