View Full Version : Hi Guys
Ok Been trying to decide what to do for a while now, needed a bit more power that the mk1 just wasn`t giving anymore.
Managed to source a half car I can have cheap off a mate. Decided I`d get the insurance quote today and then start the project.
Just as well I did, they quoted me ?1725 with ?500 excess, would be cheaper to insure a lotus esprit.
I can`t afford paying another ?1500 on top of what I already pay so now the project is gonna have to wait a while, am absolutly gutted.
I will carry it out oneday tho, it needs to be done. Until then I`m gonna put as much research into it as I can, might find a spare chassis and make a pure track 1.5 first then when the insurance is a little better release it on the road.

hi paff, welcome to twobrutal....do you mind me asking how old you are? that insurance quote seems well over the top.If i were you id do more searching about, some of us have managed to get them insured as mr2 based kits and can cost as little as ?200 a year.....having said that some of us are old farts so thats probably why! :D
Try all of the agents and see what they say,in the meantime you will find all the help you need to do your swap right here.
Am 25, was only the first quote I managed to get then ran out of time, had to stop before my boss got back. Will try a few more when I can. Probly take me a few years to manage the swap anyway, will be the first time I`ve ever attempted something like this. Done a couple of swaps on bike engines but nothing to drastic.

Theres no membership fee to join and all our help is free, you might feel the need to invest in a TB t shirt at some point though!

I would definitely try a 'classic' insurers too. A lot of old cars have engine conversions (thinking Escorts, MGB's etc..), so they should be better at sorting out a quote than the usual suspects are.

Welcome,
Slightly off topic but I have just renewed my kitcar insurance. The car is a lotus 7 replica that weighs 640Kg with 131BHP at the wheels (do the sums :D ) I am 32 and it cost me about ?270 (not the cheapest quote either) There should be plenty of companies that will do you a limited milage policy reasonably cheaply.
Now get that engine bay prepared
Gary
Cheers for the welcome guys, I will try a few more insurance companies, only had a few mins when I tried tho. Not giving up yet :D
Podge.
Havn`t tried Sky insurance yet, am from Newport myself, work in taffs well and if you are the same Podge I`ve heard about I know a couple of people who know you. They go by the names of Tony and Chin.
Would be good to get a bit of help if it all goes wrong, always handy to know someone whos been there before you. Think the worst part will be the welding, not used a welder much and not for quite a while.
But for now, I`m going to the pub, ne1 wanna pint
good luck with your descisions :) garys sums work out positive ..his kit has more power per ton than a standard mr2 turbo. welcome. :)

Its been off the road for a while, took it out last night, forgot how easy it is to light the rears up. Dont know what was more fun, realizing that I was controlling the slide or seeing the guy in fronts reaction via his rear view mirror
The following are insurers of kit cars they may do a policy for a MK1.5
http://www.kitcar-insurance.co.uk/ (my tiger is insured with these)

Oh, and Have no personal experience of them but have only ever heard bad things of 'Adrian Flux' so would probably avoid them.

Paff looks like we have a serious south wales possey (posi who knows how you spell it, and dont say I T either) coming up now as I live mid way between you and podge, literally midway I rekon as I am just north of caerphilly and am looking to do this swap with a tubby this winter and like you am gathering information now about various bits so it goes easier ! we ought to get together and check out podges' motor as it looks a wicked swap and be good to see one in the flesh and I am particularly into podges idea for intercooler tubing !
Podge, I will try and call by sometime.
Am gonna try and get a new quote today, gonna try sky first see what they will do.
Would be good to go see Podges car, it might be easier to see the finished conversion in the flesh, I always find it easier than trying to work out things from photos. I often go through Caerphilliy to get home cos the road is more fun than being stuck on a motorway everyday.
Will try and work out how to get some photos up although theres not much been done to the car that you can really see, its just a dark blue one with stainless exhaust and tsw wheels from the outside, nothing really special.
Ok, sky want ?1200 FC.
The quote is slowly coming down to almost acceptable levels.
Still only phoned 2 places so there still potential for it to get lower.
Unfortunatly just ran out of time on lunch so will have to try later.

Paff do you take the road through bedwas and machen then and past the macdonaolds in cearphilly ? I have a dark blue SC with toms 5 spoke alloys and a magnex and often trael that road but early in the morning (5am) to get into the office in London for 7 then leave at about 4 and get back about 6.30ish so have probably passed you at some point ! the pics of podges cars are really good and will make an effort to go up and see him as ponty aint far up the 470 and was there the other day checking out V spec performance.
Will have to grab a drink one night soon then !
Sam
Yeah thats the road I often take, usually on my bike tho at the moment, could well have passed you at somepoint.
Meeting for a drink sounds good, will have to see if we can get a few of us. Got 2 more 2`s in the group I hang with as well. Ones a black mk2 and the other a white mk1 that is gonna have a charger engine put in and possibly converted to run a twincharge setup at some point
cool fellas wel` def have to get together

Paff what bike do u ride then as I am also into bikes in a big way ! could be interesting to catch up with your mate then as I am about to start a twin charge engine build for the SC so info swapping could be useful ! Rekon we will have to find a night when we can all catch up then as it would be spot on to have an NA, SC and tubby all togther at once, I have some top camera equipment so we could get some pics done if you wanted as well if we got a decent location for backdrop and the sun was out !
Sam.
Got an NC30 and a GPZ 500, will have a 748 soon as I can afford it (after the mk1.5 probly).
Will definatly have to arrange a meet for all us SW crew. Would be good to get some photos done. Most nights are fine for me other than Thursdays, got a bike meet every Thurs that I try not to miss if possible/
Not sure how much info my mate has on the twincharge setup its mainly just him throwing ideas about at thew mo although you may both be able to help each other a bit.

NC30 cool, I have an RGV250M and RGV250SP both stripped at the mo then have a zxr750k1 and ZX7r and luv em both big time as they are lots of fun even if the ZXR is a pig to ride in most conditions ! I like the 748 and its one of my faves of the dukes tis for sure ! wheres the bike meeting thursday then ?
Nice I love the ZXR`s, think they are some of the best bikes about.
The bike meet is not really one to just turn up to, it is an organised MCC meeting to discuss what events are on and what we are going to. If you are just wanting to go look at bikes it won`t be for you.
However I`d like another member to join that was enthusiastic about both bikes and MR2`s so you`ll have to come along with me one Thurs and see if its the sort of thing you'd enjoy. Oh yeah Its in Pontypridd
Podge you should call by sometime too, I'm sure Tony and Chin wouldn't mind you stopping by for a pint and it would give us a chance to meet up.

Paff all sounds good mate, have u ever been to the bike meet in caerphilly on a tuesday night then ?
nope never been there, didn`t even know there was one, might have to have a look sometime tho. usually got a quiet night on tues
Well I`ve spent hours on the phone today trying to find insurance quotes.
Havn`t managed to get the quotes down under ?1200.
Gotta put the idea on hold for now, just can`t afford that much cash, either that or do the swap and not tell them but I know I'll get screwed if I do that. I will not giveup trying to get a decent quote but until I do I'll just have to work on getting the mk1 tidyed up so it looks good when its time to grow up arrives.
I HATE INSURANCE companies.
If anyone has any decent companies to try please let me know I NEED to have boost soon.
Although I could just ignore insurance completly, seems like the people that get caught without any often have to pay less than I`m getting quoted in fines anyway
