Ooh Paul, I've been looking for a ram to go on the frunk for ages, had to take the original one off when I put the carbon bonnet on as it was too strong. Any idea how much the mk1 engine lid actually weighs? I'm wondering if a 80nm ram will be enough to hold the frunk bonnet.

The actual bonnet weighs a hell of a lot more than the engine lid, i really don't think the 120nm rams will support a bonnet, each ram holds 4kgs, the bonnet is way more than 8kgs.

Oh you mean for your carbon bonnet :) , it might work, i would try two 120nm ones, forget the 80's.

stock metal engine lid is 6-6.5kg. i weighted it as I was installing carbon-fiberglass engine lid which was more like 3.5-4kg

Fair enough, I'll give two 120s a try then. Yeah I meant for the carbon bonnet, it's so much lighter than a stock one sonic might work (can't really complain if it doesn't for 4 quid mind haha)

You could buy them for the bonnet and if they don't work use them for the engine lid?

I can 100% assure you they won't work on a steel Mr2 bonnet, too heavy for these rams... they're £2 each lol

Some close ups of the attachment detail.

The "kit" comes with 3 brackets to choose from per ram, i used this one with three pan head screws here...

On the lid i opened up the bracket slots a little, stuck one side behind the upper bolt/hinge and drilled a fresh hole further up, it really is that simple.

This is a really awesome find, for the money that just can't be beat.

For anyone needing a straight OEM strut replacement, or something for a custom project, I highly recommend these guys:

    http://www.sgs-engineering.com/

The site includes an online calculation tool (input weight/pivot points etc and they will tell you length of strut and Nm required), they respond pretty quickly, were very helpful talking through my needs and supplied the right product next day delivery.

Not necessarily the cheapest, but a pleasure to deal with.
